Man fined for illicit use of neighbour’s wlan

Salo municipal court has ruled in favor of prosecutor in case concerning illicit use of neighbour’s wireless network.

This is one of the first times where court decides if it’s illegal to use someone else’s unsecured wlan. The defendant argued that many leave intentionally their wlan unsecured in order to provide others free access to internet. These are so called “free wlan hotspots” and there are lists to those publicly available on the net.

But the court noted that the defendant had not asked for permission to use the connection, so it is illicit use. Also the defendant had used the connection many times and is a computer professional so the court ruled the use intentional.

The defendant was fined but due to he’s low income total amount of fines are only 46 euros.
